Bonifatius (Boniface) statue in the Frisian town of Dokkum, province of Friesland, The Netherlands (Holland). Saint Bonifatius was born c. 670 in England at Crediton, Kingdom of Wessex. He was a missionary who devoted himself to propagate the Christian faith in the 8th century.

In 754 Boniface was brutally killed by the Frisians near Dokkum by the sword. Boniface is a Catholic Saint and his tomb is in Germany in the city of Fulda Cathedral. Bonifatius is the patron saint of Germany.

It is said that shortly after Boniface's death in Dokkum a water spring with fresh water appeared. Between 25,000 - 40,000 pilgrims from all countries visit Dokkum every year.
