View of Oude Zijds Kolk (trans. "Old Side") with old Dutch canal houses and the "Oude Kerk" ("Old Church"). This is in one of the oldest parts of the city of Amsterdam, in the harbour district, built in the years 1488 - 1544.

This spot on the photo is easy to find, just walk to the Scheierstoren, it's very close to it. The "Schreierstoren", "Weeper's Tower", is a small defense tower built in the 15th century as part of the Amsterdam city wall. The old name was "Schreyhoeckstoren", the term "Schreyhoeck" means in old Dutch "sharp angle", referring to the sharp angle of the tower with the connected citywalls in the old days.

Later people started calling it in short the Schreierstoren. There is a myth that the tower was the place where sailor's left their wives to set sail, and that their wives were weeping here to say goodbye. It is an incorrect (but romantic...) translation of "Schreiers Toren" into "Weeper's Tower".
